Myofascial release and lower back pain 23 Nov 2021
Lower back pain is one of the most common reasons for clients to book a massage treatment. I often find myself using a variety of techniques during the treatment including Myofascial release.
Lower back pain is often categorised as either:
- Non-specific – i.e. there is no obvious cause
- Mechanical or specific – i.e. the pain originates from the joints, bones, soft tissues in and around the spine
Some studies have also indicated that one case of lower back pain is the limited function of the back and deep trunk muscles caused by changes in the structure of the fascia which is the connective tissue covering the muscles.
A recent review of randomized control trails of the effects of Myofascial release on patients with lower back pain concluded that Myofascial release has a significant effect on reducing back pain disability in patients with lower back pain but no significant effect on pain intensity or lumbar range of motion.
